Why I Love What I Do
My Facebook feed recently reminded me that I had reached the 4-year anniversary of the first time I posted my Hear Her Roar branding. It left me sentimental, grateful, and thinking about why I love what I do.
I am incredibly lucky to have been doing what I love for nearly 5 years. Here’s why:
1) Coaching Combines My Love of Art and Science
I studied Chemistry and English in college. What I loved about English literature was taking works of art—poems, short stories, novels—and learning how to read between the lines of what the writer had said to uncover deeper meanings. What I loved about chemistry was that the scientific method was ultimately about being curious and optimizing procedures for the best possible results.
When I first came into the world of coaching, I was enamored. I fell in love with coaching because I was watching an art where you could read between the lines of what a human being was saying. In finding those deeper contexts and meanings, you could then support that person in producing results in their life that yielded more joy and more success. You basically optimized their life.
The world of coaching has become the way for me to magically combine the two disciplines of art and science in a way that serves other people.
2) Coaching is Introvert-Friendly
I also love coaching because I am an introvert. One common quality of introverts is that we don’t do great with small talk. We are willing to get to the heart of a conversation, or we would sometimes rather be left alone. Coaching requires putting down the small talk to get into deep, meaningful conversations.
I also don’t need to be the expert in any of these deep chats. I just need to be attentive and curious. This means I get to work with many different types of people in various industries, without needing to travel the world or work in all of those spaces myself. Coaching deepens my love for learning.
3) As a Coach, I Walk My Own Talk
I love what I do because of the life I have as a coach. Yes, that does mean I love being an entrepreneur, creating my own schedule, being my own boss, etc…
But in this case, I also mean that I believe the best coaches walk their talk. If I say, “I coach burned out executive women who have lost their joy and aren’t reaping the rewards of their own successes…” I must also constantly reclaim my own joy and create a life by my design.
Every time I support another woman leader in expressing her joy, taking that adventure, appreciating the beauty in her life, it’s up to me to do that for myself, as well.
It becomes a cyclical journey. I serve you; I serve me.
I used to be that executive. I was the straight A student who burned out before medical school. I was the early stage business owner struggling to justify hiring a team for support and delegation. Working with others inspires me to reclaim my love for my work, day in and day out. I create a life as incredible as the lives of the women I serve.
Why do you love what you do?
Are you unsure about how to answer that question? If so, maybe it’s time I support you in finding that joy again.
